While Jordan announced the cessation of the water-for-gas agreement planned to be signed with Israel, it is actively searching for ready and quick alternatives to obtain energy from some Gulf countries, in the event that Israel stops exporting gas to Amman. Observers said that Jordan is paying the price for its political stances, and is preparing well for the possibility of Israel stopping. Exporting gas, by securing the required quantities from other countries, especially the Gulf countries, led by Qatar, as well as from the Arab Republic of Egypt. Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher Al-Khasawneh said that his country is working to explore alternatives to natural gas supplies in the event that flows coming from Israel are interrupted, stressing Jordan has contacted two countries in the Gulf in this regard, and they have expressed their readiness to meet the country’s gas needs if there is an interruption to Israeli supplies. Various alternatives: The former member of the Jordanian parliament, Dr. Sabah Al-Shaar, considered that the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip has put the Jordanian state in front of fears in the event of a gas interruption. Israel, as a result of the decline in Jordanian-Israeli relations since the signing of the Wadi Araba Agreement, and Amman’s recent position on the aggression against the Gaza Strip. She said in her interview with “Sputnik” that Jordan is currently trying hard to search for alternatives by issuing bids for gas exploration in various regions of Jordan. She explained that Amman is also seeking to find alternatives through green renewable energy and increasing reliance on oil shale extracted from southern Jordan, as well as finding support from some Gulf countries to supply Jordan with gas and oil. Al-Shaar added that Jordan was trying to obtain Egyptian gas, but Egypt is suffering from a shortage. There is a sharp increase in gas demand after the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip, which could prevent the completion of this step, and the need to search for other countries and alternatives to gas. Political positionIn the context, Nidal Al-Taani, a Jordanian analyst and former parliamentarian, considered that Jordan, from the first day of the aggression on the Gaza Strip, Gaza stands with the Palestinian people to stop the Israeli genocide, and against countries’ complete bias against the Palestinians. According to his talk to Sputnik, Jordan always pays a heavy price as a result of its political stances against the Israeli aggression against Palestine, especially in the Gaza Strip, and against American and international bias. Al-Taani explained that the entity’s continuous and permanent existence, which contradicts international laws and conventions. He said that the gas agreement that Jordan signed with Israel in 2016 came with a full American guarantee, while the Kingdom relies on most of its gas needs within this agreement, to secure its energy and electricity needs. Al-Ta’ani explained that The gas agreement with Israel has enjoyed great popular opposition from day one, with calls for the need for Jordan not to depend on the energy needs of any country, especially if this country is Israel, which always seeks to export its internal crises to Jordan, including the current crisis. He stated that Israel seeks To create an economic pressure card on Jordan, which is suffering from a difficult economic situation, as a result of the global conditions and the crises surrounding it, especially those in the Gaza Strip, while the entity (Israel) uses the gas card to pressure the recent Jordanian positions, and always support Palestine. He believes that Jordan is ready To pay the price for these positions, and will never give up supporting and advocating the Palestinian issue, until it is resolved politically and the independent state is established on its entire national territory with Holy Jerusalem as its capital. Al-Taani indicated that the leadership is seeking to find alternative solutions in the event that the Israeli gas is cut off, from the Arab countries, especially Qatar and Egypt, so as not to be exposed to an energy and electricity crisis, ruling out that this card will be used by Israel, considering that America is the guarantor of the agreement. Earlier, the Speaker of the Jordanian House of Representatives, Ahmed Al-Safadi, revealed that a meeting of the Parliamentary Legal Committee would be held, including Energy Minister Saleh Al-Kharabsheh. To review the gas agreement signed with Israel. Al-Safadi said that the Minister of Energy will put the legal committee in the status quo regarding the gas agreement and related matters, stressing that in the near future there will be a decision and recommendations from the legal committee regarding all agreements signed with Israel. The Jordanian Foreign Minister said, Ayman Al-Safadi said that Jordan will not be able to continue the energy-for-water agreement, stressing that “Israel has killed the environment for peace, and is pushing the entire region towards a wide-scale war.” The Jordanian Foreign Minister explained: “We will not be able to continue the energy-for-water agreement, because it is unacceptable to a Jordanian minister.” To sit next to an Israeli minister and sign an agreement, while they are killing our brothers in Gaza.” Former Israeli Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett, responded to the Jordanian Foreign Minister, saying: “I can say clearly, Israel has sufficient energy sources to generate electricity, but Jordan does not have Enough water for its people.” Jordan obtains Israeli gas, according to the gas agreement signed between the American company Noble and the National Electric Power Company, an agreement that Al-Khasawneh said was “not on the table for cancellation,” indicating that Jordan respects its contractual obligations.
