The Syrian writer and novelist, the son of the ancient Damascus neighborhood of Al-Qanawat, who was educated in Egypt and was not influenced by the Ba’athist coup in 1963, and until the end of his stay there, he was one of those who demanded freedom and justice, and the military’s departure from the rule, which he saw only as an extension of the Mamluk rulers.

The writer has many novels and television series, more than one book on critical studies, and a book in political articles entitled “Training in Horror”. His novel “The Secret Library and the General” has recently been translated into French, and some of his other works are also being translated.

* Historically, Syria has not been able to form a state ..!

In a time of complex conflicts, there is a great need for careful analysis and extrapolation of reality, in an attempt to understand what is going on to dismantle the phenomenon and to know its causes in order to anticipate its results, so that some disasters that accompany any conflict or revolution can be avoided. But what happens is that the correct analytical method must be based on fixed facts to some extent, which are pillars or backgrounds that can be measured against, and thus when reality is the variable to be understood, then history is the constant by which we measure it.

By projecting similar historical incidents, we can sometimes understand the movement of reality, how does the historian measure things, trying to understand them that eluded political analysts, and how he gives reality a map that facilitates his understanding in order to know where the path will go, about Syria we are talking, and to know the historical scale here, al-Dhahabi reads Quick and find similar cases of its predecessor, and measure what it turned out to be:

Syria has not been able throughout history to create a state, and it has been plagued by its own geography, which is similar in its characteristics only to the Balkans, and who was unable to form a state except at the time of General Tito, but as soon as he died, the Balkans exploded into states looking for what unites them, and perhaps not Two nations are similar in their calamities, such as the resemblance of Greater Syria and the Balkans, and it is strange that these two regions did not rest until after the “Anatolia” seizure of the Balkans during the time of the Byzantines and the time of the Ottomans, who inherited from the Byzantines all geography and all internal strife and all tendencies to create states independent of “Anatolia” And all the failures that resulted from the separations from Ottoman Anatolia.

As for Syria afflicted by its geography that is torn between the mountains that want to separate from the rest of the Syrian geography, it is strange that Syria is distinguished from the rest of the world in forgetting the names of its geographical differences between the mountains calling for secession, the plains isolated from the rest of the geography, and the valleys separating the Syrian regions. In the world, who ignore the geographical names of mountains to be replaced by sectarian or sectarian names except Syria. There are Alawites mountains and few Syrians know what the name of the Alawite mountains were before they were inhabited by the Alawites .. !! And there is the modern Druze Mountain named by that name, as it was called Jabal Horan before the migration of the Druze. To him, but it is rare to call the governorate of As-Suwayda except Jabal Druze, and there is Jabal al-Kurds, Jabal al-Turkman, Wadi al-Nasara … etc. This funny joke that reflects the desire to distinguish the distinct sectarian identity of the population from the neighboring population is what kept it away from the formation of the unified state and its proximity to the regions. Separate. “

“And in the two unitary experiments in which the Levant regions decided to form a state that was soon punished harshly for its daring, in a state that destroyed the days of Queen Zenobia, and the state of the Nabateans, who intervened with all their weight until they were erased from geo-polytics, and returned them to idleness outside the intra-trade which they excelled in!”

I hope you do not remember the Umayyad state, for it is a country coming from the Arabian Peninsula and deported to the Levant, perhaps because the Quraishis were of Shami origin. Time and the Romans expelled them to Makkah, where they established the major commercial station that was in need of a state before the Muhammedan migration from it to Yathrib … And in any case, it was not It will be long before the Iraqi and Iranian geography encroaches upon it and destroys it, and Syria becomes owed to this day by the blood of Ali and Hussein, and what is in blood, but it is the excuse for revenge against regions that are not qualified to establish a state, so they established an empire? ..!

The Iraqis and the Persians did not forget that this geography tried to leap over its destiny and established an empire that has no place in a region where the Anatolian plateau, the Persian plateau, and the Great Unified Nile, which is nothing but a state of mountains, deserts and valleys, warring among themselves, and still!

The above was a talk about geography and its effects on politics, which gave birth to tyrants who are tribal sheikhs who aspire only to expand their oasis, so that it becomes a state that strengthens their standing between the kings and princes around them.

The strange thing is that contemporary Syria and Iraq have tried to create an Arab empire as Muawiya did, but since there is no new religion that they can seek shelter from and present to the people, they invented a new religion, the “Baath” and spread it among Syrians and Iraqis, trying in vain to spread it to other Arab countries without interest. This religion is “the Baath.” “A religion that needs a military victory that they have never achieved, and the belief of the defeated people that this religion is true. Here it is victorious over those who refuse to believe in it!” The Syrian and Iraqi Baathists imitated the previous Arab religions, but they were lagging behind the movement of the age in not announcing the fairness of industrial and agricultural production and the fairness of benefiting from the technical achievements that could be sold to other peoples, enriching the people, and this state can establish justice among people, so they listen to the dreams of those in charge of it. But those in charge did not find a way to convince the people except for “revolutionary” violence as they called it, which is the cheapest. They turned their military defeats into intellectual defeats, which turned the “Baath” doctrine into opportunism and opportunists who surround the Sultan and can justify his crimes, even if they are “Timurid” (Timur Al-Araj or Al-Lank) is an exterminator of the people and ruins the architecture therein until destruction, as happened in Iraq and Syria, then they dare to declare their legitimacy, which is the legitimacy of the victor, which is similar to the legitimacy of the pagan Hulagu, or Muslim Timur !!

* Master of the art of the possible in his era

Politics, as expressed by many, is the art of the possible, and we often saw politicians whose sophistication lies in their understanding of history, so reading history has a great impact on their political realism, and on the contrary, there have also been many incidents in which politicians have changed their orientations for fear of a recurrence of historical incidents. In his country, and who struck his fear. Is the recurrence of historical incidents inevitable if circumstances are similar ?! Examples of her golden leg are her from today as her from yesterday:

According to the history books that have reached us, most of the rulers who ruled Syria since the Islamic conquest were conquerors of oppression, weapons, and siege to death, except for two bitter ones against Syria, so they used the art of the possible to lead the people: They are Muawiya bin Abi Sufyan, the author of the famous saying, and I do not think it is falsely attributed to him. By God, if there was a hair between me and the people “the people”, it would not have been cut off. If they saw it, I would loosen it, and if they dated it, it would be tightened !! This saying was not directed at the ruled only, but rather to the neighboring rulers of Romans and Asians !!

As for the other ruler, “Muin al-Din Anar,” the governor of the Damascus and Homs region for a while, this man used to annoy him when he felt the threat of the Franks, and almost snatched Damascus from him. He flirted with Imad al-Din Zanki and tempted him to surrender to him from Damascus, so the Franks were afraid and they would retreat from attacking Damascus. The hands of the pacifist “Ma’in al-Din Anar” is better than its transformation into the rule of Imad al-Din al-Mujahid, who is sworn to save the Levant from their hands.

And if this Moein al-Din was besieged by Imad al-Din, he deliberately communicated with the Franks, coveting them in Damascus, so Imad al-Din would escape from the loss of Damascus and withdraw from its siege, and thus Mu’in al-Din was the master of the art of the possible in his time and the master of continuing the rule as he ruled Damascus for twenty years he spent in the palace weaving appropriate solutions For remaining in power without destroying his city and killing its residents!

* Creative biographers, hired historians.

Historians are usually subject to political leaders, and it is said that the victors are the ones who write history, on the one hand, and on the other hand, whoever has the political leadership of a country is the one who controls what we present to people from history, what we block, or rewrite. Today, to what extent did politics during the Assad era have an impact on reading history? The answer to this question is very specific, and we must go back a little:

“The relationship between the tyrant and history is very confusing. In many cases the tyrant would force the historian to write his biography, read it and write it again if the tyrant did not like it, as in the relationship between King Zahir Baybars, who fought two of his masters” Turan Shah, the last of the Ayyubid sultans, and Sultan Qutuz, the first of the Mamluk sultans. When he was killed by his generous hand after the battle of Ain Jalut and he took his place in order to enter history in the name of Sultan Al-Malik Al-Zahir Baybars. A creative history People to this day still believe, through the biography of al-Malik al-Zahir, the superiority of Baybars over the elves and humans, and he was the one who liberated the lands of Islam from enemies etc.

And among a historian who decided to be sincere to his faith and pen, so he wrote “The Ethics of the Two Ministers” (Ibn Al-Ameed and Ibn Abbad) and he was hungry until he was forced to eat the grasses of the land due to the severity of the siege imposed on him by the two ministers!

This thorny relationship between the Sultan and the historian continued until there was modern printing technology, freeing the historian transferring his means of livelihood into the hands of the readers, but the unfortunate fact is that it also freed the hands of the tyrant in preventing the publication of the anti-tyrant book, as in the era of Stalin, Mao, Castro and Hafez Assad with the difference between the two mentioned, By controlling everything that is printed and published, except that which corresponds to the mood of the ruler, his glorification, deification, etc.

There is a blatant model fit to answer this question, which is the book “The Ethics of the Two Ministers” by the great “monotheistic” writer, which was fought by the two tyrants, the two ministers, Al-Saheb Bin Abbad and Ibn Al-Ameed. One of the means of their war was that their supporters spread among the people the rumor that whoever reads this book will suffer a great calamity, not the biggest one. His library was completely burned, or a loved one dies suddenly, or his trade ship sank if he was a merchant, etc.

The book has disappeared from circulation, but there are those who say that the disaster that afflicted monotheism at the end of his life, and the poverty that he needed to eat the road grass, and which made him in his bitterness of hatred for humans burn his entire library, saying: A time that makes a writer of his importance obliged to eat the weeds of the road is a time not His children deserve to read such books, but our luck was that the books he burned were copied in abundance by copyists and papers, except for the book “The Ethics of the Two Ministers”, which disappeared from the market and from private and public libraries until people believed that the two ministers’ quote was true.

The book disappeared from sight for more than a thousand years. Then the culture’s happy luck was that a researcher in the twentieth century found the manuscript in an Ottoman library and copied it, edited it and reprinted it. It was that the book “The Ethics of the Two Ministers” escaped from annihilation and came back to life in spite of the two ministers!

* The media of the revolution is not better than the media of the regime

Perhaps the Syrian opposition media is considered negligent in the right of modern Syria’s history in terms of reading and analysis, and addressing historical angles that are unknown, or that have been distorted by the regime’s media for forty years, and how can the media serve history?

“The Syrian pro-opposition and opposition media are generally weak, as for the loyalists, because those close to the regime control the SANA agency that distributes news to newspapers. As for the opposition, it has grown up in the same school, and we need a decade of free writing training that does not interfere with the censor in the writer’s course, ideas, and analyzes, but This is very difficult for a writer who makes a living from a press controlled by a censor, who owns the safe from which the opposition journalist eats, and most of the time he does not know the priorities of journalism and the necessity of its freedom to extract the best of the writer’s abilities and analyzes.

For several years of the revolution, we were not able to provide a better press than the official press, and this may have been a result of the official press’s habit of preferring the son of the regime for fifty years over the neutral or dissident who has a free opinion, and this is reflected in the press that called itself an alternative and was not an alternative in terms of Professionalism, and this was the destiny of the opposition press, which always preferred the writer based on the ideas of the newspaper’s funder over the one who disagreed with the funder!

Al-Dhahabi added, “The problem is that we do not live isolated from the world as it was in the distant past, and what we hide today is announced by the opponent or resident on the other side of the Mediterranean today, or when his interest is in announcing what we hide, and it is shameful for the researcher to seek our political changes to read Western newspapers, where there is no declared censorship to know our news and our political developments!

The Syrian media was always poorly performing and could not be compared to the Egyptian media before the revolutionary state intervened in the opinion of the press, and the weakening of the Syrian press was increased by the Baath Party and behind it dissolving the Syrian newspapers from those who supported the party and those who followed it after the Ba’athist coup took control of all Syrian capabilities, and the loss of a newspaper was The ridiculous and the crying is a great loss for the free media, the voice of the people, not the voice of the secret services in the Baath state. Then, after decades, the Al-Domari newspaper was suspended, which tried to revive the funny and wailing, to dominate the “Sputnik” media and the press controlled by the illiterate of the state.

In the eighties of the last century, I was working for me in Moscow, and although I did not know Russian, I went to the newspapers in the hotel and carried all the “communist of course” newspapers I saw and tried to find out the news from them, and I was surprised by the poor production in all the newspapers that oversee their performance by the government or the party. The local communist, with the exception of the French newspaper “L’Humanite”, which knew that “L’Humanite” had been forced to maintain its place in the French readings, to pay attention to form and directing, and to improve the writing of the news, while the revolutionary newspaper of the ruling party in Aden was very similar to the newspaper of the Baath in the direction and writing of the news.

Listening to the words of historians, and looking closely at the lines of what they write, defines the surprise that befalls the reader, when the writer sails with him in a distant political geography, in order to lead him to the port of the present in the end. For him, the confusion continues in understanding and determining what will be, and what will be, and perhaps there is nothing new about what is going on today in terms of speeches, the present today, the date of tomorrow, and on which viewers rely. He who has no history, no basis for his rulings except for nothing.
