In light of the continuing war on the Gaza Strip, the lack of livelihoods, and the scarcity of resources, food, and water, the Palestinians resorted to searching for alternative means to secure the requirements of life. They were forced to return to decades ago and use clay ovens to make bread, after the interruption of electricity and fuel.
Ibtihaj Al-Najjar, a displaced person from the Khuza’a area, east of the city of Khan Yunis, south of the Gaza Strip. She and her family were displaced as a result of the war to the city of Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip. She volunteered with her children to make a clay oven to make bread for her family and distribute some of it to the displaced. Ibtihaj told Sputnik: “I worked with… My children took the initiative to make a clay oven to make bread for us and those around us. We succeeded in implementing this initiative. We use the clay oven due to the gas outage, and we use it for baking and cooking. The clay oven has become one of the basics of life.”
The clay oven is difficult to stand in front of for a few minutes due to its high temperature, but Ibtihaj is forced to stay in front of it at least twice a day for a long period, but the most important thing for her is to have flour to make bread, and Al-Najjar says, as she works on putting the dough inside the oven and stirring it: “The most important thing for her is to have flour to make bread. The difficulties that stand in front of us are the lack of firewood. In the beginning, it was available, but it has become scarce, and if we want to buy it, its price is expensive, but we are forced to buy it due to the lack of gas.”
She added: “The clay oven is good for making bread, but using it for cooking is useless. It requires hours and a large amount of firewood. However, I feel comfortable while working on making bread, and I feel psychologically comfortable when I distribute it to people, as if I am feeding my children.”

The population of the Gaza Strip suffers from great challenges in meeting their basic needs for food and clean water, which increases the risk of famine, in light of a severe shortage of nutrition and health care. Since October 9, 2023, Israel has tightened its siege on the Gaza Strip, which has led to the deprivation of nearly 2.2 million Palestinians from water, food, fuel and medicine.
