Amsterdam: March 10, 2026 Radio Dabanga Broad Sudanese sectors welcomed the US State Department’s decision to classify the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a terrorist organization. Massad Boulos, advisor to the US President for Arab and African Affairs, said in a tweet on the “X” platform that under the leadership of President Donald Trump, and with the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood classified as a foreign terrorist organization and a global terrorist organization on the Special Designation List, the United States continues to use all available tools to combat terrorism, confront malignant Iranian influence, and hold accountable those responsible for crimes committed against civilians in Sudan. He explained that the Sudanese people have suffered greatly as a result of the ongoing conflict, including malicious acts and grave violations committed by both parties to the conflict in Sudan. He stressed the need for the parties to immediately agree to a humanitarian truce, allowing the delivery of vital humanitarian aid to civilians, paving the way for dialogue, and paving the way towards ending the suffering and achieving stability in Sudan. A call to classify Rapid Support: For his part, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee in the US Congress, Jim Risch, said that classifying the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a terrorist group is a vital step to limit the group’s influence in the region. He stressed that the extremist Islamists are seeking to reaffirm their presence. He called for serious consideration of the classification of the Rapid Support Forces, which committed genocide and carried out terrorist campaigns in Sudan. A welcome from Hemedti: For his part, the Commander of the Rapid Support and Chairman of the Presidential Council of the Establishment Government welcomed the US State Department’s decision to classify the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a terrorist organization. He stressed in a statement seen by Radio Dabanga that the decision constitutes, in essence, a victory for the will of the Sudanese people, and represents an essential step towards drying up the sources of extremism and terrorism. He explained that the decision confirms that the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan represents a serious threat to international peace and security. It also represents an acknowledgment of the serious violations and crimes committed by this group and its various fronts, including the “army.” He accused the group of igniting the April 15 war and using internationally banned weapons. He added that the decision demonstrates the correctness of the approach they followed when they issued the terrorism law and banned the Islamic movement. He stressed the importance of coordination and cooperation with the international community to pursue the financial and regulatory networks of this group. Resilience Coalition: For its part, the Civil Coalition for Revolutionary Forces, Resilience, announced that it welcomed the classification of the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a terrorist organization. He said that the statement identified the components of this group, which includes the Sudanese Islamic Movement and its armed wing called the Al-Baraa Bin Malik Brigade. He stressed that the decision reflects the will of the majority of the Sudanese people who emerged in the glorious December Revolution. He explained that this historic decision came in response to the tireless work carried out by wide sectors of Sudanese civil and political forces. The coalition indicated that “Sumud” launched a campaign in August last year to classify this group as a terrorist organization. He called on other countries and regional and global organizations to take steps similar to this American step. In response to demands for their part, the Nairobi Declaration forces welcomed the US administration’s decision to reclassify the Muslim Brotherhood (the Islamic Movement, the National Congress and their civil and military fronts) as terrorist organizations. The Nairobi Declaration Forces said in a statement that they issued a memorandum at the end of last December calling for the National Congress, the Islamic Movement, and their facades to be classified as terrorist organizations. She stressed that the classification of the Islamic Movement and its fronts now as terrorist organizations confirms what was stated in that memorandum, noting that the decision places both sides of the war and their allies in front of the mirror of holding the Sudanese people and the international community accountable. The decision was long overdue. In the same context, the Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Abdul Wahid, welcomed the US government’s decision to classify the Sudanese Islamic Movement, “the branch of the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan,” as a terrorist group. The movement explained in a statement that the decision was long overdue, but it represents an important step and a strong message in the mail of global terrorism and those who finance it. She pointed out that the decision came against the backdrop of the tireless efforts made by the Nairobi Declaration forces, which classified this group as a terrorist group. It considered that the US administration’s decision represents a restitution to the victims of this group for more than three decades until now. The United Nations, the European Union, the African Union, and all regional and international organizations called for the Islamic Movement in Sudan to be classified as a terrorist group. External welcome: On the external level, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the American step to classify the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a terrorist organization. She explained in a statement that the Muslim Brotherhood is practicing excessive violence against civilians and destabilizing it to undermine efforts to resolve the conflict in Sudan. She indicated that the step represents a pivotal measure within the efforts made by the United States to deprive the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood of resources. The Southern Transitional Council in Yemen also welcomed the step taken by the US State Department to classify the branch of the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a terrorist group, as an important step in the context of international efforts aimed at confronting transnational organizations that represent a threat to the stability of countries and the security of their societies. The Council stressed, through official spokesman Anwar Al-Tamimi, that the nature of this organization as an international entity extending across several countries makes any action taken against it or against its branches an issue that goes beyond the internal framework of countries to become an issue directly related to regional and international security and stability. Trade union entities welcome. At the level of trade union and factional entities, the “Emergency Lawyers” group welcomed the US government’s decision to classify the Sudanese Islamic Movement (Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan) as a terrorist group. The group explained that the decision represents an important step towards international recognition of the responsibility of the political and organizational networks associated with the Islamic movement. She pointed out that the decision represents a moral recognition of the suffering of victims of violations in Sudan. She cautioned that the classification of the Sudanese Islamic Movement must constitute a first step towards strengthening international legal accountability for crimes. She stressed that this system comes within a broader context of international crimes committed during the armed conflicts in Sudan. Also at the trade union level, the Sudanese Professionals and Trade Unions Coordination welcomed the classification of the Brotherhood in Sudan as a specially designated global terrorist organization. The decision was considered an important step in the right direction, and that it reflects the international community’s awareness of the seriousness of the role played by this organization in fueling violence and undermining the chances of peace and stability in Sudan, by adopting extremist rhetoric and using tools of violence and armed militancy against civilians. It also considered the decision a clear message of the international community’s rejection of the use of religion as a cover for violence and terrorism, and constitutes important support for the struggle of the Sudanese people to build a democratic civil state based on the rule of law and respect for human rights. The resistance committees welcome: At the level of the resistance committees, the Gedaref municipal resistance committees welcomed the decision issued by the US State Department to classify the Muslim Brotherhood as a global terrorist organization. She stressed that the step would hold accountable the organizations that practiced political terrorism and organized violence against the Sudanese people, led by the Islamic Movement and the National Congress regime that has ruled Sudan since the 1989 coup. She considered the decision an important step towards besieging the networks of violence and corruption that have harmed Sudan for decades. The Kanabi Conference praises the centrality of the Kanabi Conference received the American decision to classify the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization with welcome and satisfaction. The movement stated in a post on social media that the designation of the Islamic Movement as a terrorist group by the American administration represents a major victory for the revolution and revolutionaries, and confirms the right of our people to freedom, justice, and democracy. The publication added that this step contributes to protecting agricultural workers and Kanabi communities from violations, and confirms that Sudan will remain united and safe for its people. Speaking to Radio Dabanga, Jaafar Mohamedin, spokesman for the central Kanabi Conference, praised the major American role in pressuring terrorist groups and classifying the Islamic Movement as a terrorist group, stressing that the Islamic Movement committed very major violations against agricultural workers and the Kanabi population, and that Sudan will remain united and safe for its people. A good step. Lawyer Nafisa Hajar said that the US administration’s decision to classify the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization puts the Islamic movement at a dangerous legal juncture that goes beyond political descriptions. She explained in her interview with Radio Dabanga that the legal adaptation of this classification was made under Article 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Law, and this means criminalizing any type of material support for this organization. On the other hand, there is another classification under Executive Order No. 13224, which gives the US Treasury broad powers to freeze assets and limit any global financial transactions that pass through the international banking system. She pointed out that the members and leaders of the Islamic Movement who appeared recently and declared their support for Iran clearly confirm their connection to a country originally classified as a state sponsor of terrorism, such as Iran, which represents sufficient legal presumption to prove the threat to national security by this group. She added that some of these leaders announced their desire to join the ranks of the mujahideen in Iran, which constitutes a public call for jihad and is considered a terrorist activity aimed at undermining stability, which strips the Islamic movement of political cover to take on the status of an armed militia. Nafisa Hajar referred to what she described as the impasse represented by the presence of elements of the Islamic Movement within the ranks of the Sudanese army, which constitutes a legal impasse due to the presence of overlap with another entity classified as a terrorist entity. She explained that the presence of people belonging to a terrorist organization within the military institution practically means that the army provides a haven for terrorists. Under American laws, any security and military assistance to the army is prohibited. She added that the American decision cornered the Islamic Movement in a narrow corner, and that the statements of some of its leaders in support of Iran represent a noose for this group, which ultimately means its legal eradication from the international and Sudanese political scene. She described the American decision-making stone as a good step to eradicate terrorist groups and political Islam groups. Demanding the classification of Rapid Support, the National Movement welcomed the US State Department’s classification of the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan as a terrorist group, and considered the decision a step that reflects a growing awareness of the danger of organizations that use religion or political power to build organizational networks or practices that undermine the stability of countries and harm societal peace. He stressed the importance of distinguishing between these organizations and the general Islamic movements in Sudan, indicating that the basis of international conventions and principles of basic rights is to preserve freedom of belief and political organization. He also stressed that citizens belonging to Islamic movements remain an integral part of Sudanese society, and they have the right to participate in public life and contribute to Sudanese dialogue processes and decide the future of the country on the basis of equal citizenship and the rule of law. He stressed that the international community’s battle against terrorism should not be selective or subject to double standards, but rather should include all entities that practice organized violence against civilians or commit serious violations of international humanitarian law. The National Movement called on the international community to deal seriously with the increasing demands to classify the Rapid Support Militia as a terrorist organization. Continue Reading
